The Top 10 Pound for Pound Boxers in the World Right Now

Manny PacquiaoAs with many other contact sports, boxing has various weight classes.  Obviously this means that you can have several world champions at once, across the different weight classes.  Although boxers in these different classes do not compete against each other, they can be compared “pound for pound”.  In the following article I countdown who I believe is the top 10 pound for pound boxers in the world at the moment.

Miguel Cotto

Aged 34, Cotto is the WBC, Ring Magazine and Transnational Rankings middleweight champion.  He deserves to be in the top 10 because he is one of the biggest stars in boxing right now and has just had the biggest win of his career, in which he demolished long time reigning Middleweight champ Sergio Martinez in Round 10.

Sergey Kovalev

Simply put, Kovalev is a devastating knockout force in the ring.  He stalks his opponents as if he was a wild animal and they were his prey.  He is currently the IBF, WBO and WBA Light Heavyweight champ.

Gennady Golovkin

At 32 years old, Gennady Golovkin is arguably the most balanced fighter in the world of boxing.  The middleweight is known to have fast hands and a short fuse.  The only problem he has is convincing the other top middleweight boxers into the ring with him.

Guillermo Rigondeaux

There is a lot of evidence to suggest that Rigondeaux is the best fighter in the world.  He is a master at defence and at times is so good at what he does, he can appear bored.  He is currently the WBO, WBA, Ring Magazine and Transnational Ranking featherweight champ.

Juan Manual Marquez

At 41 years of age, he is no spring chicken, but Marquez is one of the very best boxers of his generation.  He has a long running feud with Pacquiao, but remains one of the very best welterweights in the world and the absolutely best counterpuncher out there.

Timothy Bradley

What Bradley lacks in sheer brute force, he makes up for in guts, determination and throws punches like there’s no tomorrow.

Floyd Mayweather

Although this may be something of a controversial placing for one of the greatest boxers ever, but here me out.  Mayweather is a master at his craft and is better able to alter his fighting style to outdo whoever he faces than anyone else in the world.  Yes he has won a lot of titles, but recently his matches have not been as exciting as they were in the past.

Wladimir Klitschko

Without a shadow of a doubt, Klitschko is the best heavyweight the world has seen since Ali.  He is very athletic and strong and his long reaching jab and pounding right hand are two of the most dangerous weapons ever seen in the boxing ring.

Roman Gonzalez

Currently the WBC, Ring Magazine and Transnational WBC flyweight champion, Gonzalez is the most talented pressure boxer in the sport right now.  He looks set to put the flyweight (much maligned and ignored as it is) division back on the map.

Manny Pacquiao

Say what you like about this guy’s personality but he is one of the best and biggest stars o boxing.  Even at 35 years old, he is still in a class of his own.  His real edge over anyone he faces comes from his frenetic style and his lightning quick hands.

There you have it, who I personally think are the top 10 best pound for pound boxers in the world right now.  Do you agree with me or disagree?  Have your say below…
